When and Why World Food Safety Day Celebration Began? 

Food plays a critical role in keeping the body healthy. However, in order to meet people's changing eating habits and needs, the way many products are made and grown has evolved. They are contaminated with a variety of substances. So, Every year on June 7th, World Food Day is commemorated to raise public awareness about the dangers of contaminated food and water.


History of World Food Safety Day 2022?

The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed its support for the World Food Safety Day resolution adopted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at its 40th session in July 2017. Following that, the resolution was presented to the Second Committee of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, which was adopted by the General Assembly (UNGA), and 7 June was declared World Food Safety Day on 20 December 2018. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) invite us to participate in this crucial day to ensuring that everyone has access to safe food on a worldwide scale.


This year’s World Food Safety Day the theme

The theme for this year's World Food Safety Day is "Safer food, Better health." Food safety is fundamental to human health and well-being, and it is one of the most important determinants of good health. Improved nutrition and lower absenteeism in schools and the workplace are among the advantages of safe food.


  • Every year, one out of every ten persons in the globe is infected with a foodborne disease. There are nearly 200 diseases in this category, which range from diarrhoea to cancer. - WHO 


Objective of World Food Safety Day 2022

The eating of tainted foods contributes to a variety of diseases. In such a situation, the goal of World Meals Safety Day is to ensure that everyone has access to nutritious and balanced food. In addition, the goal of commemorating this day is to raise awareness of the risks of food by detecting contaminated items and informing people about them.


World Food Safety Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to raise awareness of this critical subject. In conjunction with Member States and other stakeholders, WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) enable the commemoration of World Food Safety Day.

  • On this day, the World Health Organization (WHO) advocates for a sectors of specific initiatives in a variety of sectors to make food safer.

Policymakers must support multi-sectoral collaboration at the local, national, regional, and global levels, as well as support legislative measures to strengthen national food safety systems and assure compliance with food safety standards.

To grow and develop a food safety culture, food enterprises must adhere to international food standards and engage employees, suppliers, and other stakeholders.

Simultaneously, educational institutions and companies must promote and encourage safe food handling and food safety. Consumers must also practice proper food handling at home, as well as stay aware about food safety and promote it.

  • World Food Safety Day 2022 takes place ten days following the adoption of the new WHO Global Strategy for Food Safety, marking a milestone moment in the effort to promote health, keep the world safe, and protect the vulnerable  

     

On World Food Safety Day 2022, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya unveiled the FSSAI's 4th State Food Safety Index (SFSI), which measures states' performance across five food safety categories, and congratulated the winning states/UTs based on their ranking for the year 2021-22.

Tamil Nadu was the most populous state in the country. "Goa was foremost among the minor states, followed by Manipur and Sikkim. Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, and Chandigarh ranked top, second, and third among the UTs, respectively, according to the ministry.
